The Purpose of Things (El Propósito de Las Cosas)

Recently a friend told me about a minimalist project she was doing. She was going through everything she owned and downsizing drastically. Though I don't think of myself as having a lot of stuff, she inspired me to go through what I do have.

In the process of sorting and deciding what to keep or get rid of, I realized something: Things do have a purpose.

The things in our life can serve a positive purpose or a negative purpose.

A positive purpose is when things are useful for helping us or others, when they add beauty to our lives and uplift out spirits, when they challenge us to grow, when they remind us of goodness, truth, and love.

So yes, I still have a stack of cards and letters from a decade ago, because when I read them they encourage me again. And I'm keeping the little poster I bought during college, because it has a favorite verse on it that strengthens me.

These and other things I've identified as having a positive purpose in my life.

On the other hand, things can have a negative purpose if they pull us down, slow us down, or weigh us down. Often this depends on the context of the thing. Sometimes we hold onto things we don't need anymore. Or we keep things that pull us toward the world instead of to Jesus.

I've gotten rid of movies, books and other media that I felt weren't uplifting to my soul. I've scaled down on things I used to "collect." And even though, I'm pretty sentimental, I'm learning I don't need to keep every item that reminds me of a happy memory. :) Sometimes the memory is enough and I can let go of the thing.

This process of deciding what to keep and what to let go of hasn't been easy. I've been praying a lot for the Lord to guide me. He knows what I need to hold onto and what I need to lay aside in order to run well in this race He's marked out for me.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” ‭‭-Hebrews‬ ‭12:1‬‬

I want to be intentional about the things I have in my life. I want them to add to my life, to be useful, to bless others.... Because when Jesus calls my name and I leave this earth, no thing here is going with me.

Lord teach us the purpose of things - to recognize the good gifts you give, the tools you provide, and the weights we need to cast aside...so we can run our race well and finish strong. Amen.

He limitado cosas que acostumbraba “recoger.”
