He Set Me Free (Él Me Liberó)

Today I wanted to share a fictional piece I wrote based on Acts 16. I hope it encourages you. Jesus is still setting people free, praise Him!

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." -John 8:36

Set Free By Prisoners

Until recently, I was the chief jailer at Philippi. I used to despise the prisoners in the jail. They were unworthy, undeserving criminals. What I didn’t realize is that I was also a prisoner – a prisoner of sin.

Then one night something happened that changed my life forever. The city leaders had brought in two men, Paul and Silas. The leaders warned me strictly to watch these men carefully. So I took every precaution to prevent any escape. I figured after the beating they had received, they wouldn’t have the strength to try to escape, but I wasn’t taking any chances. I fastened them in the stocks in an inner cell of the jail.

Late that night I felt restless, with a sense of foreboding. Why had those high-risk prisoners come to my jail? My job was hard enough without worrying about the wrath of the city leaders if I made any mistake.

I finally fell asleep, with my sword still strapped to my side.

Suddenly, I was awakened by the earth shaking violently! I was tossed to the floor. I grasped for something to hold onto as the earth rumbled beneath me. I couldn’t see anything, but I threw my arms over my head to protect myself as some objects fell on me. After what seemed like forever, the shaking finally ceased.

I tried to catch my breath and calm my beating heart. Then I thought about the jail! What if the walls had crumbled and the prisoners had escaped? I pushed myself up and rushed to the jail. All I could see in the darkness was that the prison doors were open!

If the prisoners had escaped, there was nothing I could do. I drew my sword so I could end my life quickly, instead of suffering the wrath and disgrace I would receive.

Just as I was about to plunge the sword into my chest, I heard a loud voice call out, “Do not harm yourself! We are all here.”

Could it be true? I yelled for lights to be brought! As I waited to see what scene would be illuminated, my mind bounced from hope to fear and back again.

At last the torches were lit, and as light dispelled the darkness, I stood there stunned.

The doors of all the cells were open, everyone’s chains had fallen off…but all the prisoners were still in the jail!

The man who had spoken was Paul. I fell trembling at his feet, deeply aware that he was no ordinary man. He had the favor of a powerful God.

“Sir, what must I do to be saved?” I asked. Somehow I knew he would tell me the truth my soul longed to hear.

His answer was simple. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”

I lifted my eyes to his, and faith was born in my heart. At that moment I believed!

That very night I awoke my family and told them about Jesus. They also believed! I brought Paul and Silas out and cleaned their wounds. Then we were all baptized by Paul.

That strange night, it was because of a prisoner that we were all set free!

Paul and Silas were officially released the next day. They encouraged us, as our small group of believers gathered together. Then the Jesus-proclaimers moved on to another town to continue sharing the good news of freedom from sin.

Now, I am no longer the jailer in Philippi. Instead of guarding people in prison, I reach out to those who are prisoners of sin. I tell them about Jesus, and how He can set their souls free!

(From the jailer's story in Acts 16.)

Él Me Liberó
