Good News

The other day my cell phone beeped that I had a text message, and my first thought was, “Oh no, I wonder what the bad news is….”

Then I stopped and thought about how sad it was that my first expectation was that there would be more bad news. When I finally got the courage to look at the text message, it was actually good news! And I clearly needed some good news that day.

Have you felt like that as well? It sure has been a crazy, difficult year. Maybe you’ve heard so much bad news this year that you’ve started expecting it.

As I was reading in Luke this week, verse 10 really hit me:

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”

I imagine that the Jews of that time lived expecting bad news. They were under Roman oppression. They didn’t have the rights and security that we take for granted today. I wonder if any of them lived expecting good news….

I love that God’s first message to the shepherds was “Do not be afraid.” I know I need to hear that message right now too.

Don’t be afraid of the unknowns.

Don’t be afraid of the needs.

Don’t be afraid of the challenges.

Don’t be afraid of the enemy.

Don’t be afraid of bad news.

“Surely the righteous will never be shaken…They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” –Psalm 112:6-7

Next the angel said, “I bring you good news” – GOOD NEWS! How long had it been since the Jews had heard good news? How hungry do you think their souls were for good news?

“Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.” –Proverbs 25:25

What was the good news the angel brought?

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” –Luke 2:11

As I read these familiar verses with fresh eyes, I realized that because of that first Christmas, you and I have the blessing of living with good news every day of our lives. Jesus is our good news!

Every day Jesus is with us – Emmanuel.

Every day Jesus is taking care of us – Shepherd.

Every day Jesus is interceding for us – High Priest.

Every day Jesus is singing over us – Creator.

Every day Jesus is loving us – Savior.

I can’t think of any news better than that!

This Christmas, I pray we’ll remind ourselves and each other of the good news of Jesus, our Savior.

“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth, peace to those on whom his favor rests.’” –Luke 2:13-14

Glory, peace, and favor to you this Christmas dear friends.
