Lately I've been struggling with the weight of much heartache. So many of my friends and loved ones are going through serious trials and suffering. Others who I care about are making unwise choices, turning from the love of God to the empty promises of the world. And it seems like everywhere we look we see Satan deceiving and destroying people.
These things are real. I can't ignore or deny them. But I've experienced the truth of this verse from Proverbs. Such heavy heartache really does crush the spirit. And I believe a crushed spirit is not what God desires for us.
So what can we do when the pain and heartache of this life weighs us down?
I think Prov. 15:13 also contains the answer. It's a "happy heart" that keeps us from being crushed by the sorrows in life.
A happy heart is not disconnected from this world or from pain. It doesn't live in denial or a make-believe fantasy.
Instead, I believe a happy heart comes from dwelling on our great God! When we consider who He is, what He has done, and what He has promised yet to do, we can't help but be comforted, encouraged, and filled with joy!
In the midst of his distress and anguish, David wrote to God:
You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. -Psalm 4:7
While the world sought happiness from food and drink, David found an exceedingly greater joy in his God! And because of his focus on God, he said, I will lie down and sleep in peace (Ps. 4:8a).
I think heartache can also rob us of peace. But Jesus clearly stated: I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. -John 16:33
While it's right to weep with those who weep and grieve over injustice and evil, we can still keep a happy heart - because we know Jesus, and He has overcome this world!
One day evil will be banished, wrongs will be righted, and all tears will be wiped away. O happy day!
Until then, it is our happy hearts that will stand out in the trials of this life. It is our joy in God that will point others to Him and empower us to do all He has placed us here to do.
I can't say it better than the man who also lived in dark times, yet shone more brightly than most:
“I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord.
...the secret of all true effectual service is joy in God, having experimental acquaintance and fellowship with God Himself.”
May God keep our hearts happy in Him as we feast on the wonder of who He is!
All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast. -Proverbs 15:15
Un Corazón Feliz
El corazón alegre se refleja en el rostro, el corazón dolido deprime el espíritu. -Proverbios 15:13
Últimamente he estado luchando con el peso de mucha angustia. Muchos de mis amigos y seres queridos están pasando por serias pruebas y sufrimiento. Otros que me importan están haciendo decisiones necias, volviéndose del amor de Dios a las promesas vacías del mundo. Y parece como que a todas partes donde miramos vemos a Satanás engañando y destruyendo a la gente.
Estas cosas son reales. No puedo ignorarlas o negarlas. Pero he experimentado la verdad de este versículo de Proverbios. Una angustia tal realmente abruma el espíritu. Y creo que un espíritu abrumado no es lo que Dios desea para nosotros.
Entonces, ¿qué podemos hacer cuando el dolor y la angustia de esta vida nos pesan?
Pienso que Proverbios 15:13 contiene también la respuesta. Es un “corazón feliz” el que nos guarda de ser abrumados por las penas de la vida.
Un corazón feliz no está desconectado de este mundo o del dolor. No vive en negación o en una fantasía fingida.
En lugar de eso, creo que viene de ¡habitar en nuestro gran Dios! Cuando consideramos quién es Él, lo que ha hecho y lo que ha prometido que hará, ¡no podemos más que sentirnos consolados, animados y llenos de gozo!
En medio de su aflicción y angustia, David le escribió a Dios:
Tú has hecho que mi corazón rebose de alegría, alegría mayor que la que tienen los que disfrutan de trigo y vino en abundancia. –Salmo 4:7
Mientras el mundo buscaba la felicidad en la comida y la bebida, ¡David encontró un gozo sumamente más grande en su Dios! Y por su enfoque en Dios, dijo: En paz me acuesto y me duermo, (Salmo 4:8a).
Creo que la aflicción también puede robarnos la paz. Pero Jesús declaró claramente: Estas cosas os he hablado para que en mí tengáis paz. En el mundo tendréis aflicción; pero confiad, yo he vencido al mundo. –John 16:33
Aunque es correcto llorar con los que lloran y afligirse por la injusticia y la maldad, también podemos mantener un corazón gozoso – porque conocemos a Jesús, ¡y Él ha vencido a este mundo!
Un día la maldad desaparecerá, las injusticias se enderezarán y todas las lágrimas se enjugarán. ¡Oh día feliz!
Mientras tanto, es nuestro corazón feliz el que se destacará en las pruebas de esta vida. Es nuestro gozo en Dios el que guiará a otros a Él y nos capacitará para hacer todo lo que Él quiere que hagamos aquí.
No puedo expresarlo mejor que el hombre que también vivió en tiempos oscuros y sin embargo brilló por sobre que la mayoría:
“Vi más claramente que nunca que el primer negocio grande y primario al que debo asistir cada día es tener mi alma feliz en el Señor.
… el secreto de todo servicio verdaderamente eficaz es gozo en Dios, tener un conocimiento experimental y una comunión con Dios mismo.”
¡Que Dios mantenga nuestro corazón feliz en Él mientras nos deleitamos en la maravilla de quien Él es!
Todos los días del afligido son difíciles; Mas el de corazón contento tiene un banquete continuo... –Proverbios 15:15
