Sing The Truth To Yourself (Canta la Verdad Para ti Mismo)

Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

I know we all want to keep renewing our minds. I think one of the areas we often overlook is what we put into our minds (either negatively or positively) through the music we listen to.

Music is a wonderful gift from God! It helps us express emotions, communicate ideas, stir our souls, and more.

Words that are put to music tend to run through our brains over and over again, even unconsciously at times. This can either be a very bad thing or a really good thing.

The songs of the world often contain untrue or negative messages. If we sing them over and over, we are allowing our minds to be conformed to the pattern of the world and have a destructive impact on our lives.

Instead, when we choose to be discerning about what songs we listen to and carefully select songs to sing that will help us renew our mind, we reap the positive benefits.

Our brains actually "listen" to what we think and say. Singing the truth to ourselves can have a powerful impact in creating changes in our brain and in our lives!

I think this is why the Bible is full of commands to sing praise to God (Ps. 92:1-4), to sing a new song to God (Ps. 33:3), to sing songs of thanksgiving to God (Col. 3:16), etc. For many of us, singing is even more effective than speaking when it comes to renewing our minds.

Growing up my family watched a lot of musicals, so I have many silly "show tunes" stored in my brain. But I learned early on what a strong effect music has on me. As a teenager, I chose to avoid most secular music. And even with Christian music, I always read the lyrics and choose carefully which songs I want to plant in my mind.

I look for songs that declare the wonderful truths about who God is and about who I am IN CHRIST.
I want to sing words that remind me Jesus lives in me and that inspire me to let Him live through me.
If I'm struggling in a particular area, I make up a song with the truths I need to keep my mind filled with God's perspective.
I use songs to express my love to God and to thank Him for who He is and all He's done.
And sometimes when I have no words of my own, God brings to mind the perfect song that expresses my heart and prayer to Him.

In a world where we are daily bombarded with lies and negative messages, I think it's more important than ever that we learn to sing the truth to ourselves. May God empower us to do so.

Here's one of my current favorite songs, filled with life-giving truths about our life in Christ.

What's one of your favorite "renewing your mind" songs?
