A Good Word (Una Buena Palabra)

Do you feel like life is just too hard some days?
Are you weary of all the bad news that seems never-ending?
Is it tempting to want to give up?

I think everyone has days like this. Everyone has days when they need some word of encouragement to keep going.

Lately I've been teaching a homeschool class on essay writing. Last week I gave the students the topic of "Why you shouldn't give up when things are hard." I was impressed with the reasons they thought of why we shouldn't give up.

They said -

*Don't give up because it will be worth it in the end.

Think about Joseph, David, and Esther. They had times when they wanted to give up, but in the end the victory, blessing and saving of lives was worth their struggle. We never know what great things God is up to, what great miracles He wants to do through our trials!

*Don't give up because it builds perseverance.

Life on earth is hard; that's just reality. We can't choose a trouble-free life, so we're left with the choice to give up or to persevere through the hard times. James 1:2-4 says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." Building perseverance isn't a fun process, but it works something good in us. It brings maturity and greater dependence on God's power not our own.

*Don't give up because when you come through the trial, you'll be able to empathize with others.

The most encouraging people for me have been the ones who have experienced similar suffering. They understand. When they nod their heads and I see the compassion in their eyes, I know I don't have to explain anything. They get it. And when they tell me God is faithful, good, and loving, I believe it because I see Him in them. When we've persevered through our trials and seen God in the midst of them, then we can encourage others who are struggling.

I was encouraged by these three insights from my young students. I pray they will hold on to these truths through the difficulties on this journey of life. And I pray those of us a little farther down the road will continue to encourage each other.

So please don't give up, my friend. Don't despair. Don't retreat from a dark world. You have what you need to keep going, to hold on to hope, and to be a light that shines brightly.

You have Jesus, and He is more than you could ever need!

The Apostle Paul was a man who knew a lot about not giving up in a world full of suffering, evil and hardships. I don't think I could offer you a better word than his exhortation to the Christians at Corinth:

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love."
-1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Entonces, no te rindas, mi amigo. No te desesperes.

-1 Co. 16:13-14
